IX Upgrade Project

Background
Xoserve is working with a 3rd party provider, Cable and Wireless Worldwide (C&WW),to develop an Enhanced File Transfer EFT) solution for all file communications between Xoserve and the IX End Users. As part of this work C&WW have reviewed the proposed EFT solution and highlighted some concerns of running the EFT solution over the current IX Network. The technology installed to support the IX Network has served its purpose however the age of the equipment is now limiting opportunities to connect new applications, which in effect could impact on performance and availability.

In light of the technical consideration, Xoserve is working with C&WW to develop a new IX Network, which will replace all core and end user hardware.

Transition
The IX Upgrade project is currently in the Transition stage and will move into the Transformation stage in the 1st Quarter of 2012. At this point, hardware at IX User sites will start to be replaced.
The Transition stage will include these key activities:

  • Xoserve to exert ownership of the infrastructure that supports the current IX Network
  • Impact assessment with National Grid to ensure no impact to their services
  • Development of a contract between Xoserve and C&WW for the IX Network to be supplied as a managed service
  • NO IMPACT to IX Network users. Transition consists of the development of the contract to Xoserve and C&WW
  • Transition to be completed by the end of December 2011

Transformation
There are several phases within the Transformation stage for the IX Upgrade project however Transformation Phase 1 will focus on the following objectives:

  • Ordering of all hardware required to replace core and end user equipment
  • Creation of the rollout plan to visit all IX User sites to replace existing hardware
  • Development of the lab environment to prove the proposed IX Network solution prior to rollout
  • Update the UK Link Manual to reflect the changes made by this project
  • Carry out the refresh as per the approved rollout plan
  • Transformation activities to be completed by the end of 2012 Quarter 3
